Another pilot in South Carolina ejected safely, but the jet flew unmanned for several minutes before crashing into a field. The company that makes the ejection seats, Martin-Baker, said their seats have worked correctly in all these cases, but the accidents still worry many people.
Political and industry leaders have also criticized the F-35 program. Former U.S. President Donald Trump, who has offered to sell the F-35 to India, once called the program’s costs “out of control.” Elon Musk, the billionaire entrepreneur, has also questioned the design of the F-35. He said the jet tries to do too many things at once, making it expensive and complicated. Musk even suggested that manned fighter jets might not be needed in the future because drones could replace them.
