Mumbai Start-Up Develops Indigenous Missile Cooler With DRDO Support

Mumbai-based Techno Defence has developed an indigenous JT Cooler for missile seekers with DRDO support, reducing foreign dependence and opening new opportunities in defence exports.

Indigenous Missile Cooler: A small Indian defence company has developed a highly specialised cooling system used in missile seekers. The company, Techno Defence Private Limited, is based in Mumbai with its R&D centre in Thane. It has developed an indigenous Joule-Thomson (JT) Cooler with support from the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO). The technology is important because it is used to cool infrared sensors that help missiles find and track targets.

The JT Cooler is a very small device, but its job is extremely important. Infrared sensors can become less effective when they operate at normal temperatures because they also produce unwanted heat and electronic noise. Cooling the detector helps reduce this noise and makes it easier for the seeker to pick up the heat signal coming from a target.

DRDO’s own technology document says the indigenous cooler is meant for high-performance cooled infrared detectors used in missile applications. It can bring the detector to its required low operating temperature in less than 10 seconds.

How The JT Cooler Helps a Missile Seeker

An infrared seeker detects the heat coming from targets like aircraft and vehicles. But the sensor also creates heat and electronic noise, which can make weak target signals harder to detect.

The JT Cooler solves this problem by quickly cooling the infrared detector to very low temperatures. DRDO says its dual-flow system can reduce gas flow to around 5% to 10% after reaching the required temperature. The cooler is small and lightweight. Technocraft Industries said in 2024 that it could weigh around 15 grams and cool sensors to about -175°C in less than 10 seconds.

Techno Defence and DRDO

The development is linked to Techno Defence Private Limited, a company established in 2016. The company says it is a joint venture involving Technocraft Industries India Limited and Dr Pravin Salinkar. Its main focus is indigenous defence technology and advanced seeker systems.

The project received support under DRDO’s Technology Development Fund (TDF). The TDF was created to help Indian companies develop defence technologies that are not easily available from domestic industry. It also encourages start-ups and MSMEs to work on advanced military systems and reduce dependence on imports.

DRDO’s official records list the “Development of Dual flow self regulation JT Cooler” as a TDF project awarded to Technocraft Industries India Ltd. in Mumbai. The work was connected with DRDO’s Solid State Physics Laboratory and Research Centre Imarat.

The project needed more than just an idea. Building a defence-grade cryocooler requires very careful manufacturing. The device has tiny parts and has to work properly under difficult military conditions. Techno Defence says its work involved specialised production methods and local industrial support. The company also says its laboratory and design centre in Thane is focused on developing advanced defence and seeker technologies.

JT cooling technology for India

JT cooling technology is a specialised part of infrared missile seekers. India has been working for years to build more of these critical technologies domestically. DRDO’s technology publications show that it has also worked on detector arrays, detector-dewar-cooler assemblies and different infrared focal plane technologies for missile applications.

The new indigenous cooler gives India another important piece of the puzzle. Instead of depending entirely on foreign suppliers for a small but critical component, Indian industry can now develop and manufacture the technology within the country.

This is especially useful for missiles that depend on cooled infrared seekers. A satellite-navigation-based missile does not need the same kind of infrared cooling system, but a missile using a cooled infrared seeker depends heavily on the detector working properly.
