India DFP-2026: Defence Minister Rajnath Singh has brought in a new system called Delegation of Financial Powers to DRDO 2026, or DFP-2026, on June 29, 2026. The Defence Ministry says this is meant to make DRDO work faster, cut delays, and help important defence research move more smoothly from paper and lab work to real use by the armed forces. The government says the plan is also meant to improve efficiency, accountability, and the speed of strategic research and development projects.
What the Government wants to change
The main idea is simple. The government wants DRDO-made systems, platforms, and technologies to reach the Defence Forces more quickly. In the official release, Rajnath Singh said that the new setup will help speed up production and induction of such work from the R&D side into the military. The release also says the framework will support stronger teamwork with industry and academic institutions. It even uses the exact line, “DFP-2026 will reinforce Aatmanirbhar Bharat vision & strengthen defence preparedness: RM”.

The ministry says this is not only about faster approval. It is also about giving DRDO more room to act at different levels. Under DFP-2026, there will be special money and clear powers for trial campaigns, testing, and evaluation work. It also allows approval for pre-project R&D work before a full project begins. The rules also separate financial powers for grants-in-aid, Extra-Mural Research Projects, Defence Innovation Accelerator-Centres of Excellence, and Technology Development Fund projects.
