DRDO Achieves 1,200-Second Scramjet Test In Hypersonic Missile Boost

India achieved a major defence milestone after DRDO successfully completed a 1,200-second scramjet combustor test in Hyderabad, boosting the country’s hypersonic missile programme and advanced aerospace technology efforts.

DRDO Scramjet Test: India’s DRDO has made a big move in hypersonic missile work. On Saturday, the Defence Research and Development Laboratory, which is part of DRDO, finished a long test of its actively cooled full-scale scramjet combustor. The run lasted over 1,200 seconds at the Scramjet Connect Pipe Test facility in Hyderabad. This came after the earlier test of over 700 seconds in January.

The test was done to check if the engine can keep working for a long time under very hard heat and speed. A scramjet is an air-breathing engine used for hypersonic flight. It helps a missile fly at more than five times the speed of sound for a long time. The Ministry of Defence said, “This successful test positions India at the forefront of advanced aerospace capabilities and continuously emerging war technologies.”

The Fuel and Coating

The scramjet setup uses an Indian-made liquid hydrocarbon fuel that helps cool the system and also makes ignition easier. The test also used a high-temperature thermal barrier coating, made to survive extreme heat that is far above the melting point of steel. DRDL and industry partners built the combustor, while DRDL and DST facilities worked together on the new ceramic coating. The Defence Ministry said the ground tests had already validated the design of the advanced active cooled scramjet combustor and the test facility itself.
