India’s Fifth-Generation AMCA Fighter Jet: India’s ambitious Advanced Medium Combat Aircraft (AMCA) program has moved into a decisive phase now, drawing the nation closer to that elite group of countries that can build indigenous fifth generation stealth fighter jets. The whole project meant for the Indian Air Force (IAF) is shifting out of the design work and heading toward prototype manufacturing, while defence experts are watching the clock closely, especially for the timeline that leads into serial production and induction.
What Is AMCA?
The AMCA is India’s indigenous fifth-generation stealth fighter aircraft being developed by the Aeronautical Development Agency (ADA) under the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO). The twin-engine multirole stealth fighter is intended to strengthen India’s air superiority capabilities against evolving threats from neighbouring countries.
The aircraft is expected to feature advanced stealth shaping, internal weapon bays, supercruise capability, sensor fusion, AI-assisted avionics, and network-centric warfare systems. The AMCA programme is also a major pillar of the government’s “Aatmanirbhar Bharat” initiative aimed at boosting indigenous defence manufacturing.

In a major breakthrough, the Defence Ministry recently issued a Request for Proposal (RFP) to shortlisted private-sector players for the development and production phase of the AMCA programme. The move marks a significant shift from earlier public-sector-led defence manufacturing models.
The prototype development phase of the AMCA project has been allocated nearly ₹15,000 crore. Reports suggest that leading Indian defence manufacturing groups are now competing for the prestigious programme under ADA supervision.
The government had earlier approved the AMCA execution model through an industry partnership approach, allowing both private and public sector firms to participate competitively.
When Will AMCA Mass Production Begin?
According to the latest available timelines from defence officials and programme-related reports, India is expected to begin mass production of the AMCA fighter jet around 2033 to 2035.
The expected roadmap currently looks like this:
- Prototype rollout: 2027–2029
- First flight: 2028–2029
- Flight testing and certification: 2029–2032
- Limited series production: Around 2033
- Full-scale induction into IAF: 2034–2035
At Aero India and subsequent defence briefings, officials indicated that the AMCA programme follows a nearly decade-long development cycle after prototype approval.

Engine and Technology Challenges
One of the biggest challenges facing the AMCA programme remains engine development. The initial AMCA Mk1 variant is expected to use the GE F414 engine, while India simultaneously explores development of a more powerful indigenous engine with foreign collaboration.
Experts suggest that stealth fighter programmes worldwide get slowed down, mostly because the technology is fiendish, the funding requirements are constant, and testing demands keep piling up. Some reports also point to worries about procurement schedules and whether the production setup is actually ready on time.
Can India Reach the 2035 Deadline?
Even though the government and DRDO sound confident, multiple defence observers think the 2035 induction goal will hinge on things like rapid prototype development, steady uninterrupted financing, dependable engine availability and the successful involvement of the private sector.
Recent policy moves to draw in private aerospace manufacturers are being interpreted as a push to speed up delivery, and to dodge the delays that cropped up in earlier indigenous fighter programmes.
If everything moves along the track they have sketched, India might end up among a small set of countries that field operational indigenous fifth generation stealth fighters by the mid 2030s.
