India’s Agni-VI intercontinental ballistic missile project has completed its design phase. DRDO is now waiting for government approval to begin hardware prototyping and full development of the 10,000+ km range strategic missile.

India’s Agni-VI ICBM Design: The Defence Research and Development Organisation is now said to be ready for the next step in the Agni-VI project. At the ANI National Security Summit 2.0 in New Delhi, DRDO Chairman Samir V. Kamat said the agency is waiting for the government’s green signal before moving ahead.

He said, “It is the government’s decision. We are ready whenever the government gives us the go ahead.” Recent reporting says the design work has been completed, and the team is ready to start hardware work and full development once approval comes.

What the missile is expected to be?

Agni-VI is being described as a very strong long-range missile for India’s strategic force. Reports say it is expected to be a four-stage, solid-fuel missile with a range of about 10,000 to 12,000 kilometres. Some older reports also said the missile could use a lighter body made with composite material, which would help reduce weight and improve performance. The idea is to build on the technology already used in Agni-V and the submarine-launched K-series missiles.

Why people are watching it closely

The biggest reason Agni-VI gets attention is that it may carry MIRV technology. That means one missile could send several warheads toward different targets at the same time. Reports have also linked the project with MaRV features and decoys that can make interception harder for enemy defence systems. Some reports say it could carry up to 10 warheads. That is why defence writers describe it as a missile that can make missile defence systems work much harder.

What it could mean for India and the world

A missile with this kind of range would reach very far from Indian territory, including many parts of Europe and other distant regions. That is why analysts see it as a sign that India is moving from a mainly regional missile posture to a much wider strategic reach. India has also been part of the Missile Technology Control Regime since June 27, 2016, and public reporting continues to describe India’s nuclear posture in terms of credible minimum deterrence and no-first-use.

At the same time, DRDO is also working on other systems such as hypersonic glide weapons and the Pralay missile, which shows that India is trying to build a wider and more layered missile force.

This is still a programme waiting for final government approval, so the real next chapter will begin only after the Centre gives the nod.
