US Navy’s New Liberty Class Ships: The United States Navy is known as the strongest navy in the world when it comes to operating in deep oceans. It has big ships like aircraft carriers and submarines, but that is not everything it uses. One very important job is moving supplies from one place to another. This includes food, medical items, and even weapons. This work has been important since the Navy first started.
Now the Navy is thinking about the future. It wants to use ships that can run on their own without people onboard. These are called autonomous ships. A company named Blue Water has made a new type of ship called the Liberty Class. These ships can travel across the Pacific Ocean all by themselves and can keep running for up to three months. This is a big step in new ship technology. These ships can carry important things anywhere in the world when needed.
The Navy and other countries are slowly moving toward using both normal ships and autonomous ones together. This mixed system helps save manpower. With ships like the Liberty Class, fewer people are needed for supply work, so more can focus on actual combat duties.
Inside the Liberty Class ships
Blue Water built these ships using a design based on the Damen Stan Patrol 6009 hull. It has a special axe-shaped front which helps it stay stable in rough seas. This is very important since no humans are there to control it.
Each ship is about 190 feet long and 30 feet wide. It weighs around 850 tons. It can go up to 29 mph and travel as far as 11,500 miles. The ship can carry four large 40-foot containers and hold up to 165 tons of cargo.
Since no crew lives inside, the ship does not need things like air conditioning or living space. This makes the inside simple and saves space. Because of this design, the ship can keep working for 90 days without stopping.
Blue Water also made sure these ships can be built faster. Since they are using an existing design, they do not need to start from zero. The ships are being built at Conrad Shipyard in Louisiana. The factory uses robots to help with construction. They can build around 10 to 20 ships each year. Work on the first ship started in March 2026. If everything goes well, these ships could soon be seen working around the world.
Why the name Liberty?
The name Liberty Class is not random. It is inspired by the Liberty Ships used during World War II. These older ships were not famous like warships, but they played a huge role. They carried supplies and equipment to soldiers during the war. Without them, the war might not have ended the same way.
Back then, the United States built more than 2,700 Liberty Ships. They were made very fast and in large numbers. Blue Water chose this name to show that their new ships are also meant to be built quickly.
During World War II, shipbuilding was extremely fast. On average, three Liberty Ships were built every two days between 1941 and 1945. One ship called the SS Robert E. Peary was built in just 4 days, 15 hours, and 29 minutes.
