Sweden NATO Military Deployments in 2027: Sweden’s government has asked parliament to approve military deployments for NATO’s collective defence in 2027. This includes sending ground forces to Finland and Latvia. The government also wants to continue its planned Patriot air defence support in Poland during the first half of 2027.

The proposal includes land, naval and air forces. The exact number of troops and other military units will depend on NATO’s plans. The proposal needs approval from Sweden’s parliament, known as the Riksdag.

Sweden Plans to Continue Air Defence Support in Poland

Sweden plans to provide Patriot air defence systems for NATO operations in Poland from December 2026. The government now wants parliament to approve keeping this support in place during the first six months of 2027.

Sweden also plans to contribute ground forces to NATO’s Forward Land Forces in Finland and Latvia. Sweden is the framework nation for NATO’s forces in Finland.

The proposal also allows Sweden to send military units for other NATO operations and activities that may come up during 2027. These deployments could include ground troops, special forces, naval units and air force units. Ground-based air defence systems could also be used for these missions.

Foreign Minister Maria Malmer Stenergard said Russia remains a major security threat to Sweden and its allies.

“Russia is the most serious threat to Sweden and the security of our Allies,” she said. “Our continued contribution to NATO’s deterrence and defence embodies the solidarity in which we implement our Alliance policy.”

Stenergard said these military contributions would help protect Sweden and other NATO members. She also said European countries need to take more responsibility for their own security within NATO.

Defence Minister Pål Jonson said NATO needs strong defence capabilities because of the current security situation.

“In the current serious security situation, it is essential that NATO has a strong and credible deterrence and defence capability,” he said. “By contributing military units to NATO’s collective defence, we are strengthening the Alliance’s capability to defend its member countries.”
