Iran Puts Defence First as War With US-Israel Continues: Envoy Mohammad Fathali

Iran says its main focus is self-defence during the ongoing war with the US and Israel, while keeping diplomacy open later if talks can protect the interests of its people.

Iran Defence Focus: Iran’s Ambassador to India, Mohammad Fathali, said on Monday that Iran is mainly focused on protecting itself as fighting in West Asia keeps going on. He said the country is still open to diplomacy, but only if the situation becomes right for it and if it helps the people of Iran.

In a written interview with ANI, Fathali was asked if Iran still sees talks and negotiations as possible. He made it clear that for now Iran is thinking first about its safety and about answering the attacks it says it is facing.

He said, “Under the current circumstances, the priority for the Islamic Republic of Iran is to defend the country against aggression and hostile actions by the enemy. For 38 days, we have been defending ourselves against aggressors and will continue this path with strength. Our primary focus is on delivering an appropriate response to attacks by American and Zionist aggressors.”

Iran says Talks are still Possible Later

Even though Iran is now busy with security matters, Fathali said diplomacy has not been fully closed off. He explained that any choice about talks would be made by top leaders and only if it helps protect Iran’s national interests.

He said, “At the same time, decisions regarding entering any form of negotiations are made within the framework of overarching policies and with the input of the highest decision-making bodies. Whenever it is determined that the interests of the Iranian people can be secured through diplomacy, the necessary steps will be taken.”

He said “It should also be emphasized that we have had a very negative experience with the flawed cycle of war, ceasefire, negotiations, and then renewed war. Our officials are prudently working to ensure that this experience is not repeated.”

BRICS Seen as Important for Iran

Fathali also spoke about BRICS and said Iran sees it as a very useful group for building stronger ties with growing economies. He said Iran wants to work more with countries that are looking for ways outside older power systems that have shaped global politics for many years.

He said, “For the Islamic Republic of Iran, BRICS represents an important platform for expanding cooperation with emerging economies and reinforcing approaches independent of traditional global structures. Iran has consistently sought to participate in BRICS meetings at a high level. However, Iran’s clear priority at this stage is to encourage BRICS member states to adopt a responsible position regarding current developments and to condemn unlawful and criminal actions by the United States and the Zionist regime. Iran believes that BRICS can play an effective role in supporting the principles of international law, countering unilateralism, and helping to reduce tensions.”

These remarks came at a time when the Gulf and the larger West Asian region are facing rising tensions. The clash involving Iran, Israel, and the United States has now moved into its second month. The fighting has affected many parts of life in the region, including civilian areas, energy sites, and military infrastructure.
