India and France to Hold 7th edition of Joint Military Exercise ‘Shakti’ to Enhance Defence Relations

India and France are set to conduct the seventh Joint Military Exercise ‘Shakti’ in Umroi, enhancing defence relations and enhancing the combined military capabilities of both nations’ Armed Forces.

India-France Joint Military Exercise: To enhance defence relations, India and France will hold the seventh Joint Military Exercise ‘Shakti’ in the Umroi area of Meghalaya from May 13–26.

The Indian Army claimed the exercise seeks to improve both sides’ combined military capability to carry out Multi-Domain Operations in a sub-conventional environment.

The combined drill will also help the Armed Forces of the two countries build friendship and interoperability.

November 2021 saw the Military School of Draguignan, France host the sixth edition of the joint army exercise between France and India, Ex Shakti 2021.

Three officers, three junior commissioned officers, and 37 soldiers from a battalion of Gorkha Rifles and support arms made up the Indian Army contingent.

The course included elements of coordination needed for cooperative operation in a counterterrorism setting under UN mandate, as well as joint planning and mutual comprehension of operation conduct.

According to Economic Times, the troops taking part had to go through rigorous tactical training and combat conditioning exercises including fire drills and “battle hardening” exercises. Two phases of the exercise were completed, and the last one, a demanding 36 hours, was held to confirm the standards reached in the first two.

Earlier, from April 22 to 25, Chief of Defence Staff (CDS) General Anil Chauhan was in France.

The purpose of the visit was to strengthen even further the strong defense links that have developed between the two countries in the past few years.
